Goliath Hotend From VzBoT 3D - March 2023 Update
If you’ve been following the blog, you can probably piece together that Modern Makes is a big fan of Simon Vez and VzBoT 3D. The Goliath hotend is at the top of the pyramid when it comes to pro-consumer 3D printing technology. In my opinion, this hotend is probably the last hotend a home user would ever need. Every problem that the average hotend faces has been addressed and smoothed out and its capabilities surpass every need one might have.
It was originally planned to be released by Christmas 2022 but the combination of legal trouble and production delays in China have pushed the release date significantly. No firm dates have been set yet as Simon doesn’t want to disappoint people but it is getting close.
I’ll quickly go over the legal troubles that caused the delay and get into when and where you can expect this piece of hardware to be available.
Slice Engineering vs VzBot
The legal trouble that caused the delay was the result of patent infringement that was filed against VzBoT from Slice Engineering. Slice, creator of the well-known Mosquito hotend, holds a patent that has to do with how the hot side and the cold side of the hotend are held together. They use 4 standoffs to accomplish this.
The sad thing about this is that the use of 4 standoffs has been widely used by almost every hotend manufacturer for years. Slice was just the first one to patent this which basically allows them to erase their competition from the market unless they modify their design.
Facing the fear of losing his product to the patent infringement, Simon updated the design of the Goliath which resulted in a meaty delay.
Simon has stated that he has no hard-feelings towards Slice, and that “business is business”. He truly is The People’s Champ.
Release Date.....?
If you’re in Europe then consider yourself lucky because the Goliath is currently available there. I don’t know exactly the reasons and I won’t be spending any amount of time wondering.
Simon Vez has stated that the release date for the rest of us hasn’t been officially set as he doesn’t want to let more people down. What a guy….
However, looking at his updates it seems like production of the Goliath is back to full-swing and we should see it released by this spring. That’s just my opinion.
